Zero to Ironman in 10 Months: My Journey Starts Here

Have you ever pushed your limits to achieve something that, at first, seemed impossible?

That's exactly what I'm doing.

I'm attempting to go from barely being able to swim two laps of a swimming pool, to completing an Ironman 70.3 in just 10 months.

But I'm starting this journey as strategically as possible.

I'm using the power of the 30 day challenge to keep my training consistent throughout the 10 months.

Sometimes, the most daunting challenges lead to the most remarkable transformations.

10 months of non-stop training (to me) sounds very daunting, but that's why I'm splitting the 10 months of training into 10, more bitesized, 30 day chunks.

My journey begins with running 5k every day for 30 days.

Why an Ironman? And Why Now?

Over the last few years, I've been stepping out of my comfort zone, meeting more people, networking, and I noticed something.

I really admired the people that were running successful businesses, maybe they had kids and were an amazing parent, their health was in check...and they were training for an Ironman.

How do they do it?! How do they find the time?!

I don't even have kids, yet I still struggle to find the time to go to the gym!

So I broke down their approach and realised they did two things really well.

They:

1. Prioritised their family + health above everything else
2. Had systems and processes in place to be as productive as possible throughout their day

So I did the same.

First step - commit to prioritising my health. How?

Because with each passing year, I realize this challenge would only become more difficult.

It's not just about crossing a finish line - it's about proving to myself that I can transform from a casual exerciser into an endurance athlete.

The beauty of this challenge lies in its tangibility. Unlike the endless cycle of going to the gym without a clear purpose, the Ironman gives me a definitive goal.

It's not just about working out; it's about working towards something extraordinary.

Starting with a 30 Day Running Challenge

My approach to this undertaking begins with something I've learned to trust over the years: 30 day challenges.

Since 2013, these month-long commitments have considerably improved my exercise consistency.

From consuming two hours of educational content daily to learning a new language, these challenges have proven their worth in creating lasting change, time after time.

The decision to start with running 5k every day for 30 days wasn't random.

It's a structured approach to building both physical endurance and mental resilience.

Going from minimal exercise to daily running might seem aggressive, but that's exactly what the Ironman journey demands.

The Fit in 30 Framework: My Secret Weapon

To ensure success in my 30 day running challenge, I'm following the Fit in 30 framework - a proven seven-step system that's helped countless others achieve their fitness goals.

This framework isn't just about physical training; it's about creating a sustainable path to success through careful planning, tracking, and accountability.

The framework begins with identifying what will move the needle most significantly - in my case, establishing a consistent running routine.

But it's the community aspect that makes it truly special. Being surrounded by others pursuing their own 30 day challenges creates an environment of mutual support and motivation.

The Bigger Picture: A 10-Month Strategy

While the 30 day running challenge is just the beginning, my overall plan spans 10 months and includes several strategic milestones:

Month 1-3: Building a strong foundation across all disciplines, with primary focus on running

Month 3: Tackling a 5km ocean swim (Oceanman 5km challenge)

Month 6: Completing a full marathon

Month 7-8: Focusing on cycling and completing a cycling race

Month 10: The ultimate goal - Ironman 70.3

These smaller, more bitesized goals, such as competing in a 5km Oceanman swim, and running (my first!) marathon, help me stay focused and motivated for my longer Ironman goal.

Health First: Understanding My Body

One crucial aspect of this journey is monitoring my health meticulously.

Recent blood tests revealed some interesting results, including testosterone levels slightly above the normal range.

While this initially concerned me, consultations with healthcare professionals have assured me that my body is ready for this challenge.

To support this intense training regimen, I'm prioritizing nutrition.

One of my best investments has been a high-quality blender, helping me increase my vegetable intake through daily smoothies packed with superfoods like hemp seeds, flax seeds, and pumpkin seeds.

The Power of Public Accountability

By sharing this journey publicly, I'm creating an additional layer of accountability.

There's something powerful about putting your goals out there for the world to see.

It's not just about the potential embarrassment of failure; it's about creating a community of supporters who can learn from both my successes and mistakes.

Learning from Others While Blazing My Own Trail

While this journey is personal, I'm not too proud to learn from others who've walked this path before.

I've been studying successful Ironman completions, learning from their experiences, and adapting their strategies to fit my situation.

This includes understanding the importance of proper form, injury prevention, and the mental aspects of endurance training.

Beyond the Finish Line

This journey isn't just about crossing the finish line in 10 months.

It's about the person I'll become along the way.

Through these 30 day challenges and the broader Ironman preparation, I'm not just training my body - I'm developing discipline, resilience, and a stronger mindset.

The decision to document this journey serves multiple purposes.

Yes, it keeps me accountable, but more importantly, it might inspire others to tackle their own seemingly impossible goals.

Whether it's through 30 day challenges or longer-term commitments, the message is clear: transformation is possible when you break down massive goals into manageable chunks.

Your Turn to Take Action

As I embark on this journey from zero to Ironman, I invite you to join me in your own way.

Whether it's starting a 30 day running challenge, committing to daily exercise, or working towards your own ambitious goals, the principles remain the same: start with a clear plan, break it down into manageable chunks, and take consistent action.

Remember, every great achievement starts with a single step.

For me, it's running 5k every day for 30 days. What will your first step be?

Stay tuned for monthly updates on this journey, and feel free to join the Fit in 30 community to start your own transformation.

After all, the best time to start working towards your goals is always now.
